Many of you have heard the old familiar saying, "I have a marriage made in heaven." Marriage between a man and woman was in fact instituted by God, who by the way conducted the first wedding ceremony between the first couple---Adam and Eve.
In fact, the Jewish Talmud teaches that God Himself adorned Eve like a bride, and brought her to Adam, signifying His blessing of their union. Genesis 2:21-24 reads as follows, "And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; and the rib which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore, shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh."
God instituted marriage between a man and a woman, and sealed it with His Holy Name. The Hebrew word for Man is Ish. It contains the Hebrew letters Alef, Yood, and Sheen. The Hebrew word for woman is Ishah. It contains the Hebrew letters Alef, Sheen, and Hey. So what is the spiritual significance of this? God inserted a letter from His Holy Name, Yood-Hey-Vav-Hey into this union as a sign of both His approval and blessing. If you take Yood which is in Man's name, and the Hey which is inserted into Woman's name, it spells the first part of God's name Yah. Yah is the first part of God's Holy name, Yahweh or Jehovah.
What did the Psalmist David say in Psalms 68:4? He wrote "sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name YAH, and rejoice before him." If you take God's name out of the union of marriage, it spells the Hebrew word Esh, which means Fire or Contention. In other words, without God in any marriage there is bound to be contention and trouble.
The Bible tells us, specifically in Genesis 2:18, 20 that God created Eve to be a "help meet" for Adam. The Hebrew word for "help" is Ezer, which literally means help. The Hebrew word for "meet" is Neged, which means opposite. So God created Eve to be a help opposite of Adam in every way---sex, genetic makeup, behavior, emotions, etc. Those who have studied the physical and behavioral differences between a man and a woman have found this to be true.
